I think about the best anyone can do is look back at what Donald Trump told us during his campaign. You might remember this from his Inaugural Speech on January 20, 2017.
After listing everything (real or imagined or made up) that might conceivably be wrong with the United States, the newly minted President acted as if he hadn’t been stirring up “fear and loathing” for years. So much fear that he could use this applause line with a straight face:
“This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.”
